What is a GFCI?

GFCI is a ground fault circuit interrupter.  It is a device installed in the socket to prevent electrocution.  They are usually installed where electric circuits come in contact or near water, like bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, etc.  They can also be found in garages or outdoors.Security is always a prime concern, especially to homeowners. Perimeter or other security lighting gives illumination to the dark areas around the house. They operate only when needed because we install motion sensors.

Are GFCIs required?

Starting in 1971 GFCIs were required in all houses.  The Canadian Electrical Code states that a Class “A” GFCI be installed within 1.5 meters of a sink and outdoors within 2.5 meters of finished grade.

Common Problems with GFCI:

  • Something within the circuit of the GFCI is leaking electricity or is shorting out.
  • Problem with the structural wiring
  • Check the power to the device
  • Check wiring to be sure it is correctly connected.
